MADE believes that knowledge about the kinds of careers you can find in the arts should be an essential part of every school’s careers programme. With this in mind, we brought together our experts on Youth Voice and Employability to begin building a leadership programme that would introduce young people aged 14+ to the arts & culture venues on their doorstep. Over 6 months, they will be hosted by 6 different venues and meet the inspirational people running them.

This month, the Creative Leaders visited the Whitworth Art Gallery where they had a look around the interactive exhibits, learnt about unconventional artistic careers and reflected on their time in the programme.

The day began with a talk and tour by Andrew Vaughn, artist and Learning Manager at The Whitworth, as they discussed the qualities of a creative leader and learnt the stories behind the current artistic installations – including a reconstruction of the gallery in Minecraft!

Following a lunch in the picturesque Gallery Cafe, they brainstormed the effectiveness of different advertising techniques, and came up with several ideas to increase MADE’s profile amongst their peers. They discussed changes they would make to the programme beyond the pilot, and what MADE can offer that is missing from their education.

“The people on the programme don’t make jobs sound scary.”

“Schools focus on the wrong stuff... the rules they enforce have a genuine effect on us.”

“The more sessions we had the more comfortable we were to talk.”

Join us next time for the last session of the programme with Factory International!
